Autumn 'to do' list for your Home

Carpets.
A whole summer of dusty feet coming in from the garden makes carpets look flat, grubby and tired. Time to book your "Always Clean" carpet cleaning appointment.

Driveways.
The wet summer has caused havoc in Britain. Stones or Paving may have been dislodged by driving rain or tough weed growth and will certainly have ground-in dirt. A professional clean and seal will return your driveway or patio to its former glory and it can then be sealed for protection against the winter weather onslaught.

Allergies? Eliminate Dust Mites from your Carpets

If you look up "PROMITE" on Google, you'd be quite right to wonder why we smear it all over your carpet to eliminate dust mites.
Image is not of an actual house dust mite
House dust mites are mostly found in carpets and mattresses; their numbers are increasing because we provide perfect conditions - humid warm environments - in our centrally-heated, double glazed homes.

They are a significant source of allergies, including asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis and dermatitis.

There are a couple of ways to eliminate dust mites. One is to subject them to extreme heat (60'C) or cold (0'C) for about an hour so putting your pillow in the freezer would be quite successful - but what can you do about your sofas, mattresses and carpets?

The other is PROmite™ - the world's most affective dust mite eliminator when applied on a planned maintenance program (not the wannabe Marmite). An invisible protective barrier prevents new house dust mites living on the surface and, additionally, gives protection from most household soils including oil-based spills.

Don't delay, contact us for details:

Would you notice if your Carpets Smell?

Kitty photo credit: marykbaird from www.morguefile.com

We get used to odours in our own homes and summer is usually a great time to 'air' carpets as windows and doors are open most days - except this year! In fact, wet dogs and muddy shoes are still leaving marks, cats are staying in and dropping hairs, we may even have resorted to bringing barbecue food and drink inside, adding to the spills and smells.

Time to think about a freshen-up. We are usually very busy in the first week of September, when children return to school, as well as the end of July before our customers set off for their annual holidays.

We clean carpets in Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire or Milton Keynes areas - take a look at what we offer and contact us for a late spring-clean!

Buying a Carpet and Caring for it.

When choosing a carpet, consider how much wear it will get – a bedroom has less wear than a hallway - and how long it should last - a few months until someone buys your house or years with a growing family and pets and muddy boots? Poor quality carpets will become flattened or discoloured soon after fitting.

If carpets are not fitted properly, joins and gaps not only look ugly but can trap dirt. Improperly laid, un-stretched carpets may have lumps, bumps and wrinkles, causing doors to scrape and catch each time they are opened or closed. Additionally, a loop pile (e.g. Berber) must be cut correctly - if a loose cut is caught in a vacuum cleaner, it will unravel along the whole seam. The same is true of loose threads from carpet backing.

The carpet industry’s trade body, the Carpet Foundation, suggests that £20 per square metre should buy a good quality carpet. A quality underlay and fitting will cost extra.

Your carpet, however good its quality and however clean your home, will eventually attract and trap dirt - particles in the air from open doors and windows, minute dead skin cells, etc. Dirt and dust should be regularly removed with a vacuum cleaner and professionally cleaned every few months for a deep-down carpet clean - especially for better quality carpets - to ensure that your carpet has a long life always looks good.

Selling your house? First impressions count!

We don't often 'see' our home as others might see it - when we return from work or with the weekly shopping, we just go through the door and get on with our lives.

If you are thinking of putting your property 'on the market' it is important to convey a good 'first impression'. People will see a photograph on a website, in an estate agents' window or on paper details. Usually, the photograph will be of the front of the house and, even if it isn't, some people will use Google Street View or check out the location in person.

If you have a front garden, keep the lawn and foliage neat so that it looks nice and seems easy to mange. Paths and driveways must be seen to be low maintenance so they should be repaired, if necessary.

Paved driveways can look tired. Remember, when you first had your driveway paved, how good it looked? Paved driveways can be restored to look as good as new. They can also be sealed to look good for longer.

Don't panic if you have a tired old tarmac driveway - you don't have to replace it as these too, can be repaired, cleaned and sealed so that your old tarmac drive looks like new at a fraction of the cost.

When you've read this article, leave your house and stand across the street to stare back at it. Are the guttering and downpipes in good order? Do your windows and entrance door need a coat of paint or varnish? Are the curtains or blinds attractive?

Come back in and look at your entrance hall - is it bright and uncluttered? Now, if you are moving home, you don't want to spend a lot of money of doing it up - the likelihood is that the buyers will change things anyway - but you should consider that a well presented home will sell much faster than one that is cluttered or grubby.

Most people expect to redecorate when they buy a new home but many will not have the extra budget to renew carpets therefore it is essential that the carpets you include in the sale are an asset rather than a liability. Ensure that each room looks as good as possible by having your carpets professionally cleaned. You can often have three carpets cleaned for the price of two.

Why Carpets should be cleaned following Household Flooding

An elderly lady living in a ground floor flat noticed rust-coloured marks appearing on her bed cover, just below the ceiling pendant. Being partially sighted, the woman contacted her son who noticed that there was discolouration and dampness on the pendant plus cracks forming on the ceiling, around which large patches of damp were visible. The problem was traced to the shower unit in an upstairs flat, where the waste outlet had become detached.

The source of the problem was fixed, the electricity checked and the ceiling repaired. The water had not only soaked through the bedding and the mattress but linen kept in the divan drawers were damp and so was the carpet under the bed. The water damage to the carpet was minimal, with no visible stain so, rather than replacing it, it would be cleaned.

It was essential to clean the carpet and replace the mattress, rather than attempt to leave them to dry out, because of the source of the water and the course the water had taken. First of all, it was waste water but, additionally, it had been laying in the dirty, dusty cavity between the floor and ceiling of the flats which may have been harbouring bugs, mice droppings or other debris and building materials. In addition, there was an unpleasant musty odour that would be difficult to eradicate from the mattress but could be solved by cleaning the carpet (which would have been considerably more expensive to replace).

The carpet was cleaned and dry in a few hours.
